Complaints and Member Protection Information Officer
The University of Sydney Kendo Club is a member of the NSW Kendo Association. As part of the state body, each affiliated club is recommended to have at least one Member Protection Information Officer (MPIO).
A MPIO is the first point of contact in a club or sporting organisation for any enquiries, concerns or complaints around harassment, abuse and other inappropriate behaviour.
The MPIO provides information about the rights, responsibilities and options available to an individual making an enquiry or complaint and provides and moral support to the person with the concern.
The Australian Sports Commission maintains a database of MPIOs that allows people who need the help of an MPIO to find one in their sport and/or their state.
What does an MPIO do?
- Ensures the safety and welfare of Club members
- Assists in grievance and complaints resolution
- Listens and acts as an impartial body, offering a sounding board to bounce ideas off
- Clarifies basic points and concerns
- Refers to a sport’s member protection or welfare policy and explains what constitutes inappropriate behaviour
- Explains the complaint process and options available under the sport’s members protection or welfare policy
- Discusses any relevant laws and the right to complain to external agencies
- Offers to provide details for counselling or other referrals if appropriate or requested
- Monitors and follows up the enquiry or complaint
Our current MPIO member is Ioana Levins, who can be reached at this email here. Ioana has completed the mandatory training by the Australian Sports Commission (Play by the Rules – MPIO) and is also an accredited Mental Health First Aid Officer (Mental Health First Aid Officer).
