Tell us about yourself
I’m a 4th kyu and I’m currently studying for my Juris Doctor degree in Law. My bachelor degree was in Japanese Studies. How long have you been practicing Kendo and why did you begin?
This will be my 6th year of kendo. I started training in my first year of uni. It’s always been something that I wanted to learn. After I finished high school in Rome, I actually decided to attend this university because of this kendo club. I came across the website when I was in Italy, and as soon as I arrived in Sydney I joined up on the first day of O-Week. I’ve been here ever since.
What do you like about Kendo and what do you get out of training?
Kendo has really changed me. It gives me a good reality check and keeps me humble. It really makes you reflect on your mistakes. I like how you learn not to be selfish in kendo. It’s so difficult sometimes, but I found kendo really forces you to recognize your own weaknesses and flaws, and then pushes you to overcome them. What is your best memory or experience from kendo?
I’ll never forget my first ever shiai. It was also my first time at Uni Games. I was absolutely terrified and I was defeated in less than 10 seconds. But even though I lost, it was like a whole other world had just opened up because of that first match. It was a great experience.
What is the best advice you’ve ever been given in kendo?
Don’t lose to yourself before you’ve even gone. In a match, it’s not really your opponent you’re fighting, it’s yourself. If you get hit, it’s not your body that hurts, it’s your ego. You have to get over that to become stronger.
Is there anything else you would like to say about your Kendo experience?
From what I’ve seen I believe that people who start kendo and stick to it, through all the obstacles, frustrations and tough training, come out so much stronger. I think it takes a real inner strength of spirit. I really admire them all. They’re truly considerate and compassionate, and they really look out for each other. There are so many truly amazing people at USYD Kendo Club and it’s an honor to train with them all.
