Tell us about yourself
Hello! I’m from Hong Kong and am currently studying a Masters degree in speech language pathology (yes, my campus is next to the graveyard). I majored in linguistics (study of languages) in my previous degree. I haven’t graded for a while, but I’m currently in 4th kyu (?).
How long have you been practicing Kendo and why did you begin?
I started kendo in the latter half of 2011, so I suppose three years and a bit at the time of writing? I began kendo as curiously – I had a couple of friends doing it and I thought I might as well give it a try.
What do you like about Kendo and what do you get out of training?
I suppose what I like best about training is the fact that it stretches your limits – physically and mentally. The fact that it builds your character is also another factor of why I continue to train.
What is your best memory or experience from kendo?
There’s not really a single best memory or experience, but getting that first ippon and a fighting spirit award at the same tournament was pretty awesome.
Is there anything else you would like to say about your Kendo experience?
To those who are still training, hang in there. Don’t give up yet! Everybody’s kendo journey is different; there will be many times where you may plateau or decline. However, if you continue to train, you’ll be able to see the benefits. There were many times I thought about giving up, but I never took upon that decision. I’m incredibly lucky to train and learn from the people I practice with today.
